Salt air and heat: what they do to your car in Cartagena

High humidity, salt-laden sea breeze and constant heat wear a car down faster than inland. What fails first, in what order, and what you can do about it.

Why it's different here

A car in Cartagena doesn't age like one in Bogotá or Medellín. Here three things come together at once: high humidity, salt-laden breeze and heat that doesn't drop at night.

Each one on its own is manageable. Together they speed each other up: humidity conducts, salt attacks metal and heat accelerates any chemical reaction. That's why parts that last years in another city last months here.

The battery is the first thing to give up

It's the most common complaint, and there's a concrete reason for it: heat expands the casing of the battery and lets gases escape. Those gases, meeting the moisture in the air, form the white or greenish deposits you see on the terminals.

That corrosion acts as an insulator. The car starts to crank sluggishly, the lights dim, and one day it won't start at all. The battery may still be perfectly good: what's failing is the contact.

The general recommendation for a coastal climate is to check the terminals every three months and clean them at least at every oil change.

Rust doesn't start where you can see it

Salt doesn't attack the paint first, it attacks the underside of the car: the chassis, the brake lines, the exhaust mounts, the bolts. Rain never washes that area, so the salt builds up there.

By the time a bubble shows up in the bodywork, the process has been running underneath for a long time. That's why it pays to look underneath now and then instead of waiting for it to show on the outside.

Rinsing the underside with fresh water after a day at the beach does more than it sounds: it removes the salt before it settles in.

The air conditioning works twice as hard

Here it isn't a luxury, it runs constantly. The cabin filter clogs sooner than in a temperate climate because it collects moisture as well as dust, and moisture trapped in a filter is where the smells come from.

If the A/C smells odd when you switch it on, it's almost always the filter and not the refrigerant.

Plastics and rubber, because of the sun

Direct sun hardens rubber. Wiper blades crack and stop clearing the glass even though they look intact, and door seals dry out and start letting water in.

A car that sleeps outdoors ages on the outside considerably faster than one under cover, and it shows in the rubber first.
